A.E. Robb and Associates were engaged by Robert Wiseman & Sons to design the M&E services for what is now regarded as the world’s most efficient and environmentally advanced production dairy. With only a few months before the site was due to commence production, A.E. Robb, along with the other members of the design team, embarked upon a design process that ran alongside the construction works in a condensed programme that began in August 2006 and resulted in an operational dairy for the Client, with the first milk production being achieved in December 2007. The dairy at Bridgwater integrates all facilities including provision of full packaging and a plastic carton blow moulding plant. It also includes effluent treatment to process all waste water and provide water to drinking water standards which is then used for vehicle cleaning – and supplied to adjacent land-owners for irrigation. During the design and construction period, the design output capacity of the dairy increased from 300 million litres to 500 million litres – the design team incorporated these new requirements and achieved completion of the main dairy within the required timescales – Robert Wiseman & Sons required milk to be processed on site by December 2007. The £48m, 325,000m², production dairy site consisted of a 45,000m² building incorporating 2 million litre raw milk storage, milk pasteurisation facility, 600,000 litre finished milk storage facility, 3,500m² blow moulding plant for bottle production, 30,000m² bottle filling hall, 7,000m² fully automated bottle store facility, 5,500m² packaging milk production and distribution chilled storage. The rest of the site features a purpose-built boiler house which has the functionality for Biomass fuel, drive through lorry brush wash, four bay jet wash building, five bay vehicle maintenance building with two storey amenity block, site gatehouse, farm services office, amenity building and full effluent treatment process plant.
